"The Challenges in Improving Scientific Literacy"


Andrea Poet, Director of Programming and Public Relations of the Chicago Council on Science and Technology, will describe the challenges in raising the public’s scientific literacy. She will review the challenges in educating reporters, getting scientists to engage in public discourse and in improving school curricula. She will also describe the deficiencies in current STEM training.

 

 

About Andrea Poet:

Andrea Poet is Director of Programming and Public Relations of the Chicago Council on Science and Technology.

Chicago Council on Science and Technology, works to bring scientists to the public, and raise scientific literacy. And a large part of her job is to remind scientists why it is so important that they interact directly with the public, to share their discoveries and sense of wonder about the world first hand. She studied journalism, and science writing, and worked as a reporter before becoming involved in communications and science communications specifically. She holds an MS in environmental management and sustainability.

 

Our Adult Programs:
A typical Sunday meeting begins at 10:30, ends at noon and consists of a speaker or presentation focusing on current issues, ethical philosophy, lifespan education, or the arts. Platforms are open to the public and admission is free, although we request a donation of $5.
 
Our Program for Children:
The Golden Rule Sunday School, for children from birth through 8th grade, also meets every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, September through May. For more info, contact the Sunday School director at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
